A Busy Body’s Simple Guide to a Lifetime of Happiness and Bliss
As I get older and older and my responsibilities pile up, I find myself getting overwhelmed. Personally, I’m a learner. I am intrigued by knowledge and love learning new things. One time, I thought it would be so fun to take up cooking. After a few google searches, I thought to myself, “Katelynn, you know damn well that you don’t have time to take a cooking class.” And my inner-self was right; I really had no time to schedule in a cooking class.
Typically when I start getting overwhelmed, my anxiety sky rockets. I have a few tried and true methods for dealing with anxiety like going for a walk or taking ashwaganda every day. You can read more about how I deal with anxiety or how I destress on a Sunday.
If you’re a busy body like myself, I’m sure you think winding down to cure anxiety is totally anti-productive.
Simply turning my mind “off” gives me more anxiety knowing I’m wasting time doing nothing. Whenever I go to yoga class, I try my hardest to let go of my mind but like clockwork, my mind goes straight back to my to-do list and thinking off all the things I could be doing instead of stretching. Totally defeats the purpose of yoga, right? Yogi’s, I wish I could be more like you and just zen.
That’s when I started walking and reading.
Did I say reading? I meant to say walking and podcasting. Walking while podcasting is a way for me to clear my mind without fully clearing my mind. AKA type A heaven. Not only do I take steps towards a healthier life but I’m also enriching my mind. Some of my favorite podcasts are from fellow female entrepreneurs like The Skinny Confidential, Julie Soloman, Jenna Kutcher, and Gary Vee (not a female, I’m aware)
By nature we’re movers, travelers, hunters and gatherers. Our bodies are naturally designed to carry us from place to place, day in and day out. Not only is walking a proven mood booster it’s a great way to ensure a lengthier, fuller life while improving immune function. All leading to a happier, healthier experience in the day to day. Simply walking at a casual pace for 30-60 minutes per day, is enough to gift you with all these life-changing benefits.
Then we have reading…
Reading is one of those things that we all know we should do, but it’s finding the time and the energy to sit there and concentrate for a set amount of time. That’s where audiobooks come in. Since you’re already dedicating a bit of your time to walking for your overall health, why not combine it with the benefits of reading too? You can simply plug your headphones in and learn about whatever it is that can enhance your life.
How about ‘Becoming’ by Michelle Obama or ‘Girl, Wash Your Face’ by Rachel Hollis? These great books you’ve wanted to read but haven’t found time for. Or how about countless ideas to growing your empire like Julie Soloman? Whatever it is that strikes your fancy and helps to enhance your life and bring you happiness, is a great choice.
Walking is something that should not be neglected. I’m hoping by now you may have made the decision to dedicate yourself to walking regularly; might as well double the impact it and learn something new. The beauty of audio books and podcasts is that we don’t have to limit ourselves to listening while we’re walking. Whenever I drive to LA, I always pop on an educational podcast. It makes my mundane drive seem much more beneficial and productive
The final thing I want to talk about today, since we’ve already covered two out of the ‘big three’ daily practices, is the undervalued third one. Meditation. This one I must admit, is not my strong suit.
Meditation kind of has a bad rap to non-meditators.
You don’t need to be in a dark room filled with incense and tranquil music. Meditation can be done anywhere and it only takes 10-20 minutes per day! By meditating 10-20 minutes a day, you can improve your mental health and focus, reduce stress and anxiety, prevent of memory loss. You know, just to name just a few. As a ten-minute *pause* for your day, it’s worth giving it a go. They say it only takes 3 weeks for a task to become a habit!
On the topic of meditation, meditation needs to be mindful. Luckily there are popular apps like Insight Timer, Aura, and Stop, Breathe, Think to get you started. Meditation is on the rise, and those using it are enjoying more self-awareness, kindness, and a sense of calm. Most people start to recognize huge benefits around their third week, so it’s definitely something worth sticking to. In the short term, it’s nice to check out (or rather check-in with ourselves) for ten minutes.
Walking. Reading. Meditating. Simple as ABC.
Three excellent daily practices to improve our lives tenfold, all in just about an hour. Why not set yourself a goal of adding this to your routine every day for a month, and then have a check in with yourself to see how you feel at the end of it?
