Taking Invitae’s Cardio Screening Test Changed My Health’s Future

As I’m sure many of you know, I was adopted when I was born.
I won’t go into too much detail today but you can read more about it on a blog post I shared after I met my birth mother for the first time. After Cash was born, I really started thinking about my health. Not just making sure I was eating healthy for the future but also considering my genetic makeup. When you’re adopted or don’t know your biological parents, knowing your genetics can be near impossible. When I had the opportunity to work with Invitae at #BlogHer20 Health, I was so pumped.
Prior to the event Invitae sent each of us a Cardio Screen.
The saliva test, which was sent through the mail, was checking 77 of my genes to help determine my risk of developing an inherited form of cardiovascular disease. When the test arrived, it came with all the necessary equipment to take the test as well and ship it back. Don’t you just love when companies think of the little details like prepaid return shipping? One thing I really respected about Invitae’s genetic tests is that they are medical-grade, which means they’re the same tests your doctor would use. Most test kits consumers can take from home require a secondary medical confirmation but not Invitae! One test gets you the results you need.
How did taking the Invitae Cardio Screen change your health future?
Well, I got the results back with a notification to my email. Once I logged into the Invitae portal, my results showed that I was positive for a variation in my F5 gene which is associated with factor V Leiden thrombophilia and factor V deficiency. Really not knowing what I was looking at, I did some more digging and spoke with a genetic counselor to better understand my results. Come to find out, factor V Leiden is a rare blood disorder that causes dangerous blood clots and can cause still births in the second and third trimesters. Right away I shared the results with my OBGYN and he put me on a baby aspirin once a day. We concluded that having this heterozygous gene in my genetic makeup could have been what caused all my miscarriages in 2019 and could have been detrimental to my current healthy pregnancy. I am honestly just blown away at the results because I would have never known had I not taken the Invitae Cardio Screening test.
It is so important to understand our bodies and our health.
I consider myself a very healthy person. I work out regularly and eat whole foods that are part of a balanced diet. Prior to taking this test, I wouldn’t have guessed I had any predisposed health conditions; I felt and feel great! But it is so important to undergo genetic health screenings to be more in-tune with your own body. Did you know that 20% of early heart attacks are caused by hereditary high cholesterol? You could live a healthy lifestyle, do all the right things, and not even know that you have genetic high cholesterol!
I did my future-self a favor and took the Invitae Cardio Screening and I don’t regret it for one second. I’ve learned more about my genetics and what I could potentially pass down to my children, which is so valuable. Thank you Invitae!
